Cover reveal time! My first academic book The Trans Midwest: Trans Feminist Coalition Building Since World War II is coming out in January 2027 and it looks so, so good. This image comes from the Transvestite/Transsexual Legal Committee's newsletters and encapsulates one of my book's key arguments. This image was inspired by Wonder Woman, a favorite symbol of the Flippies, a Chicago lesbian separatist organization that for a time worked closely TLC because they thought trans liberation was in their own interest as dykes. These kinds of coalitions have been ignored and erased, so much so that trans feminism is popularly assumed to be a new idea. My book proves that trans people have long been a part of feminist movements and that coalitions between trans people and others are not just possible but a critical part of our history. Hear me out because this is important: you can help your kid love writing by finding tools that help, instead of focusing on "overcoming" their difficulties. No person ever overcomes disability. Instead, we learn to find accommodations that work for us. Shame and guilt aren't going to work. Targeted instructions and practice can be important, but what really helps are the right tools. For me, that's been things like screenreaders that help me hear errors my eyes miss. I had to develop those strategies myself, but you can help a child find what will work for them more easily and sooner than I did. Then when they have something the want to share with the world through write, they'll be able to. And they might even love it. Only one more tip left and it's the most important. Stay tuned Tip 4: Record your stories so your child can see their creativity without having to struggle. Let creativity be fun, so they can develop some motivation. Tip 3 for helping a child develop into someone who likes writing, even if writing is hard for them right now: tell stories with them. I know what it's like to be a disabled kid who hated writing, but now I'm an adult who loves it. Here's how you can support a child like me. Do you have a child for whom writing is really hard? I was that kid and I can help you prepare your kiddo to like writing - later, when they're ready. My hot take I never realized was hot: you should read to your child at a higher reading level than they can read and read beyond their lived experiences
